Traditionally, flashlight applications on iPhone did nothing more than turn the screen white. With the iPhone 4, however, a real flash is available, which is significantly brighter than the screen.

Aureola is a simple utility for turning the LED flash on the iPhone 4 on and off.

In addition to being able to turn the light on and off by flicking a switch, there is also a timer feature that allows for the light to be turned off after a period of time.

This can be used, for example:

- if you are heading off to bed and are too lazy to use actual lights to see where youre going (I, myself, belong to this particular demographic of idiots waiting for an accident to happen)

- as a night light

- perhaps most important of all, by draining the higher-capacity battery in the iPhone 4 that much faster, it will make your iPhone 2G-, 3G- and 3GS-owning friends marginally less jealous of your iPhone 4, and therefore less likely to club you over the back of the head and take it (smearing Vaseline across the Retina display will almost completely eliminate the iPhone 4 envy factor).

Disclaimer: this will quite obviously drain your battery, and any use of Vaseline on iPhone is unsupported!
